Why I chose private speech therapy over free school therapy

Choosing between private therapy and public school therapy can be tough.  Here are a few issues our families faced and pushed them to chose SAGE:

  • "Public school therapy only gave us 30 minutes of group therapy per week"
  • "I kept hearing"¦Your child is not eligible for speech, but they do have a speech delay"¦"
  • "We are missing valuable education time, or my child has to miss PE for speech"
  • "We rarely get contacted by the school SLP"¦what can we do to help our child?"

These are just a few of the reasons our clients choose private speech therapy, rather than the free therapy provided at public school.  Many times, the children we work with do have a documented speech and/or language delay, but are not deemed eligible for public school services, because they are not "delayed enough."  So, even if your child does get some services at school, why should you seek out additional speech therapy?

Pros of in-home or private speech:

  • Parent training and education helps speed progress
  • one-on-one, intensive sessions are shown to promote the most effective progress
  • child is not pulled from academic time OR from recess/PE (both critical to brain development!)
  • therapy is tailored to your child's needs specifically, not the needs of a diverse group of learners
  • private therapists are not tied down by "red tape" in the school system. You and your SLP have the freedom to create the most appropriate goals and treatment plan for your child and their needs.
